Breastfeeding mom asked to leave public library computer room – UPDATE

I wanted to share a quick update. I’ll make this long story short- So back in August of 2012, Noah was just 2 months old when then Beatties Ford Regional library, librarian manager, Ms Iris, asked me to stop feeding Noah where I was seated.

This the exact shirt, day, position, and hour with which Noah’s feeding was violated.

Wednesday Wow!  Breastfeeding In the QC,” by Kelle Pressleyqcsupermom, 22 August 2012:

I thought this would be a quick visit, but it wasn’t so I shift [my two month old baby] inside my white, thin, cotton shirt to feed him.  The only thing visible was his soft curly brown locks.  Seconds later a library volunteer approached me(twice),then the female security guard (twice), and finally the older female supervisor.  The message was consistent, plain and clear.  I cannot nurse at the computer.  I had to stop, get up and go into their 8x10ft nursing cellar.  I refused each time telling them I knew my rights and not only were they violating my rights as a library patron, but also as a breastfeeding mom.

The coverage with Dan from SafeLibraries was interesting as well –

@CMLibrary, which harassed #bfing @QCSuperMOM, has blocked me from reading its @Twitter feed! So much for #FreeSpeech!

So yeah, I was heated for a long time. But got over it as the feeling of accomplishment

filled my spirit. Knowing that standing my ground would definitely encourage other moms to breastfeed with pride as well. And it did. The story traveled further than I have traveled so far.  I could never be hushed for something I believe in- I’ve always been

stubborn like that.  But here’s the update.  img_20181007_165114_555

That little dark stuff room is now a nicer place to nurse.  Of course if you want to let the liquid gold flow in the lobby you can, but, I thought I would share that with you.

I was there this week and ran into a long time employee of the library.  She,  Ms Vivian shared with me that it was created after my breastfeeding incident in 20I2. She then invited me to tour inside the newly updated nursing moms space. What was a flex space for small storage is now a intimate, cozy, tiny silo for all nursing mom’s.

I’m okay with that, but more importantly interested in ensuring more staff*, understand the importance of not breaking breastfeeding moments.

Breastfeeding is normal. It can be done in public by women who ARE more comfortable with it than I was with no problem. And the fact is, in most place, they’re protected by law to do so. – CafeMom

Breastfeeding is normal

-To all the new moms that a fearful, ashamed and any other way un-encouraged to feed your baby your liquid gold, please read this and understand that you are everything your baby needs to survive! It was given to us as a gift from God. Before there was formula, there was breast milk. And if you truly want to give your child the absolute best, go on and slide a boob up in your little ones mouth.

Mama’s Cinco De Mayo Deals & Details

Cinco de Mayo Is Not Mexican Independence Day! That’s ok, you can still celebrate!

We choose to celebrate because we love spicy tacos, fun music and bright colors!

“It (Cinco de Mayo) started out as a cultural celebration, then became bigger and bigger,” said Sánchez. “And at some point it became very commercial; with people taking advantage of the day to drink all the Coronas they can drink.”

Today marks the 154th anniversary of Cinco de Mayo, a bicultural celebration. For us, it’s a great way to teach the children about the Latino cultural and have a little fun at the same time.

Cinco de Mayo is the celebration of the courage of the Mexican people during the battle (La Batalla de Puebla) on May 5th, 1862 where 4,500 Mexican soldiers defeated the Mexican traitors (exiled Mexican Convervatives) and French army of 6,500 at Puebla, Mexico . The reasons why Cinco de Mayo is celebrated on a much larger scale in the United States is maybe because :

  • If it had not been for the victory, France would have aided the South in the American Civil War and this would have an impact on the war.
  • Chicanos celebrates this day in appreciation of its cultural and historical significance.
  • General Ignacio Zaragosa was born in Texas when it was still part of Mexico and is considered to be a Chicano hero.
So in honor of all our Latino friends everywhere…… this collection is for you!

Wednesday WOW: Let’s Get The Kids In The Kitchen.

four little boys cookingInvolving your kids in the kitchen enhances their appreciation and basic knowledge of different foods and good nutrition. You can teach them safe ways to handle food as well as simple cooking techniques. Plus, the time spent together is invaluable family time and encourages a lifetime of healthy eating.8 yr old shredding cheese

I like to look in various magazines, cookbook newspaper ads,, and even old menus for inspiration on what to cook. Now don’t get me wrong, I have also passed by other people and have secretly drooled at what they are indulging.

For us, not much is off limits. There are many ways to make just about everything healthier and tastier to enjoy.

Here’s how my large family create a healthy meal together.

1. We look to see what we have and note what we need. Coupons can be grabbed from the Sunday paper and online. In the fridge, we look for:

            1. Freshness
            2. Enough  of the ingredient for the recipe
            3. Something everyone can and will want to eat.

2.We determine who will do what. This is based on each ones age and ability to safely follow directions. There are six children in the home ranging from two to sixteen; a helper or two is never hard to find.

For most children you can give the following kitchen jobs:

2-4- year olds children can stir, roll, and even mash ingredients in a large deep bowl. This age group, however, needs very close adult supervision since their dexterity and motor skills are still developing.

5-7  year olds can help with reading  recipes, measuring, juicing, and prepping, and gathering certain ingredients. They may still need reminders to watch their fingers during grating and peeling.

8-11 year olds can cut, use specialty appliances like the panini press, waffle, ice cream maker, bigger knives and maybe even able to roast veggies. Now with a grasp of some basic cooking skills and an appreciation for the rules of the kitchen, young cooks are ready to take on more complex tasks using more kitchen equipment.  Of course, close and constant supervision are required at all times.

12 & up* This group can place and remove food from the oven, and even help create a healthy menu for an entire  week.

Here’s one of our weekly meals. Lasagna

  • 8 ounces muenster cheese (we dice it our self to save money)
  • 8 ounces mozzarella cheese (we dice it our self to save money)

Why teach children how to cook?

  • Cooking can be a fun time to bond with your kids, as well teach basic cooking education(importance of proper food safety practices, including food storage and kitchen hygiene ).Your kids will become more independent and confident.
  • Before they leave home, they should know how to successfully cook and eat well when on their own.
  • Teach them the difference between food and highly processed food items. If you don’t have a garden consider starting a container garden and shopping from a farmers market.

Wednesday Wow: Quit already! (and update)

I know you’ve seen it before. You go into your local pizza shop to place an order and POW’ you get slapped with a grumpy employee. Well, that’s what happened today and boy did I surprise myself. I tell you, if more people would listen to that Kenny Roger’s song, life wouldn’t suck so much for them.

So here’s what happened. I sat in the car while my daughters went in to order, it seemed like forever. Then one of them walk out and jumped in the car. “Mom, you need to go in there, that lady is abusing Cassie.” Now what do ya think I did?

Yup, I quickly walked in and asked what’s going on. Cassie didn’t say anything. The cashier/Shonda didn’t either. Instead she went on to filli the order. I’ve always been told to be mindful of pissing off people that make your food, so I stood in-view of everything. She wasted so much inventory throwing it on pizzas and the waste tray. Then the phone began to rang. She thought it was children playing. The calls kept coming and she said “They keep calling and I;m gonna curse their “A”  out. I knew at that time she had been there too darn long. Still I stood, watched and listened. Seems as though a few other employees called out as well. I still don’t know what was said to my daughter, but it must’ve been raw. “Shonda” had a man in there and her two minor kids. The man came over to me as he walked out the door and said, “That’s my wife and she was suppose to get off an hour ago. Her hand is hurting and…….. ” I stopped him right there and asked if it was his children, how would he feel? He was shocked and replied, “Oh, I understand, I just wanted to apologize because she’s really nice. She’s just in pain right now.” At that point I wanted him out of my face. I told him that I thought he was very loyal and that is commendable.

Moments later, Shonda and family left.  It didn’t seem like a manager was there but I knew from my mystery shopping days, that the sticker on the box and the customer service poster on the wall was all we needed to complain. And that I did.

I called as soon as I got home. When I came out to eat, these kids had pork on their plate. YES, PORK! We don’t eat that mess! So now I’m waiting to hear from “Ryan.” When he calls me back I have something else to add to the list of “The Shonda Report.”

My message to “Shonda” and all others like her:

When it’s time to go, it’s time to go. Everyone needs money, and have to determine their level of contentment. The problem is being “content” can easily lead to complacency—and that’s the danger zone. Complacency tends to generate excuses Worst of all, complacency will eventually lead to fear. And fear holds us back or lead us to other’s that will not accept lame excuses. I.E. ME!!!!! Quitting can be good for individual workers as well as for the economy as a whole. As it it creates an opportunity for someone else to fit in.

Boy, I can’t wait to chat with “Ryan” tomorrow. If this doesn’t get cleared up satisfactory, not only will I stop supporting them, I’ll also fill in the questions you guys maybe wondering right now.How did i surprise myself? I didn’t snap back at her. I thank the creator for growth and wisdom.

Wednesday Wow: Papa Murphy’s AND the Mom Tour

Papa Murphy has the best pizza PERIOD. The end.pi

A few moms and I had the opportunity to tour “Behind The Counter” of Papa Murphy’s Pizza Shop.I know, it doesn’t sound like a big deal, but wait till I tell you more about the #papamurphysmoms visit.

We fulfilled our wildest dreams when we made our own dough!

After seeing how much work goes into preparing the ingredients,I felt honored to partake of the yummiest pizza ever. They have the biggest mixer called Hobart. Besides the cheese, it’s the next expensive asset there. They dice fresh vegetables daily and for you calorie counter’s out there, they weight everything!

This is how the pizza is sold after you order it. Instructions and all.

The Papa Murphy’s mission is three common core values which, when done consistently, create a “great” Papa Murphy’s pizza experience.- Chris Ware Store #36

They have no oven, toaster, or other heating apparatus. So you can’t call it a “restaurant” What they do offer is fresh ingredients, awesome service and the freedom to make it your own at a fair price.

Their Menu Treasures:  (they have these with the normal pizza toppings)

Fantastic toppings that include:  Zucchini, Artichokes hearts, garlic,Canadian bacon, 2 different vegetarian meats, then you can try meat stuffing; crazy desserts like Gluten Free CC cookie dough. They even have side items like: bottled crushed red pepper and herb and cheese blend. Gosh, I am sure that I’m leaving something off, here  -see more here- .

They salivated over this.

I wanted to know what steps do the reduce waste. He explained to us that the plates the pizzas are sold in is placed in the oven and then on the dinner table. Which is also the same for the Mimi Murphy’s.  Speaking of them, the Mini Murphy’s, ALL OF My CHILDREN LOVE THEM. piizzaMy 21 year old college son paid my 3 year old off for his, minus the tattoo that came with it.

Oh and before I forget, Papa Murphy’s Pizza accepts EBT (SNAP).

This is a great stress free place for your older teens to work. And if you are looking for a great business opportunity – go with Big Papa Murphy (Chief Executive Officer, Ken B. Caldwell) ! Franchise fees are less than a restaurant and as Mr. Chris stated, it has been a blessing to his family. Not only is it an upper body workout to cut the huge blocks of cheese. The pizza crew also have a strategy to rough up the dough to protect staff from Carpal tunnel syndrome. Chris also mentioned that he

We eat cochineals!

Hungry? How about a nice big bowl of yummy Yoplait strawberry smoothie with cute Skittle drops on the side? Would that make you happy? If not, how about a big cherry smoothie from Mc Sandwich King?

If any of that tickled your fancy, you may be a bug eater. (like I was)

I don’t want to eat bugs, never have intentionally. Boogers YES.  But bugs, not so much.

Cochineal. Carmine. Crimson lake. It's found in your yogurt, your juice box, your smoothie and your red velvet birthday cake.

Cochineal. Carmine. Crimson lake. It’s found in your yogurt, your juice box, your smoothie and your red velvet birthday cake.

Make sure to read ingredient labels for any of the following: crimson lake, natural red no. 4, carmine or carminic acid, or cochineal.

Make sure to read ingredient labels for any of the following: crimson lake, natural red no. 4, carmine or carminic acid, or cochineal.

If I walked in a store and seen packages of dog heads, I know instantly that I will not purchase it. dogsNo questions asked. I know 100% what I am buying. Cochineals on the other hand are hidden and disguised. This bugs scale dye, cochineal has been used as a coloring agent since the 15th century and considered safe. Today these  dried bodies may be found in wines, yogurts, candies, fruit drinks, ice creams, ketchup, lipsticks, eyeshadow, nail polish – you name it. My choice would be if food just didn’t use food coloring at all. That would make me happy.

I guess it depends on how prevalent the bugs are, whether they are dirty, and other info.- TC.

During my research, I found that cochineal is not good for people suffering from rhinitis or asthma.
A lot of sausages contain E120, or crushed beetle. Everyone who sleeps in a bed will swallow about two spiders or insects per year.

All I’m saying is list it in a way that I’ll know what I’m eating immediately.

Chances are I may still eat it. As reported, the FDA already allows a percentage of unclassified ingredients in our food. I would much rather eat a bug than ….. let’s say petroleum, saw dust, rubber or ingredient “x”.

If people would read a little more about what is in the manufactured and processed food they eat they would never eat again. The amount of mouse and rat droppings ,hair ( human and animal ) roaches, other insects, plus saw dust, wood ( used as filler and labeled ‘”fiber” ) , and chemicals allowed in our food is frightening .These things cannot be eliminated so they are allowed…and besides most of our factories, slaughter houses and stores are not inspected as there is not enough people to do it. Much of our food is grown, processed and packaged in other countries too. Do you believe China and South America check for bugs in the cargo holds of the ships full of rice, coffee beans, grains, cocoa beans and tea etc. they ship here? Let’s not get into fruits and vegetables flown into our countries! Now, lets all say ” EEWWW !”- Cassandra P.

But all is not lost. You have 4 choices. 1 Grow/ cook it yourself from scratch. FYI, beet juice will give you the same results. 2. Tell companies to stop this unnecessary practice ( like General Mills and Kellogg). 3. Read & discover better alternatives within the market place. or  4 Continue to eat Mrs Ladybug from James and the Giant Peach. Cochineal 6

Our food should not be this complicated. Educate yourself and pick your battles.

They do not really look like that..... :) If so, I would have one as a pet for my children.

Friday Four: QCSAHM 5th Of July Potluck ’13

DIGITAL CAMERADinner parties are expensive, everybody’s busy, and with good friends, or a great mom support group you’re not worried about impressing anyone. You just want to hang out and relax. RIGHT?  Potluck parties are one of the least stressful and most budget-friendly ways to throw a dinner party. But as with most communal efforts, they work best when everyone works together. We had our annual 5th Of July Potluck today. It wasn’t a large as a crowd we had last year, but for an rainy, day. We did fine with the 12 people that made it out.

Moms love big savings! We love eating and we love other families. Here are 4 reasons to consider having or attending a potluck dinner with like minded families.

Queen City Stay At Home Moms annual potluck 5th of the year gathering

Queen City Stay At Home Moms annual potluck 5th of the year gathering

1. Know why you’re having it! If it a birthday celebration, everyone can chip in with a gift.  If its in the summer, do it at a park. If it’s cooler out, do it at a friends house. The key is to maximize the day! You could even make a fun play date out of it.

Don’t assume counter or prep space. Also if you’re hosting it, be prepared to provide the entree. Large items are typically difficult to transport and would be an inconvenience to one of your guests to bring to the meal.

2, Understand what to do. Who will bring what and how much? Where will you meet? Under the shed or by the play ground? Does everyone eat red meat? Any vegetarians?  What time?

Make a dish that is hardy enough to survive the trip to the party and can be served at room temperature.

3.Make sure you organize it. If you host it at a park, call the local Park& Rec center for permission. (If your circle is comprised off non cookers, except one & everyone wants quality food-pay that friend to cook dinner for ya’ll once a month. Surly, they are willing to chip in for a great meal with a awesome host (Hey chef, get your money in advance, use Zokos!) while its NOT a potluck any more, it’s still an organic option to enjoy food together with friends-affordability. )

4. Don’t forget to get them to label their food. A piece of painter’s tape and sharpie would  be fine–or someone might walk off with your plate/ bowl.Speaking of sporks, where will the tables and chairs come from?

You follow these 4 points and every potluck you plan from here on out will save you time, money, sanity and brain cells.

Hello Everyone! TGIF Right ? first off, let me introduce myself. I’m Deanna and today I’ll be doing my mom’s Friday Four blog so she can catch up on “Wednesday Wow”. So let’s get to it shall we?

My topic today is TEA 🙂 . Chamomile, Green, White, and Rooibos tea to be exact . Did you know that Tea is the second most consumed beverage in the world after water ? An average three billion cups of tea are consumed daily worldwide.

Tea, and in particular white and green tea, is praised for its many health  enefits, including antibiotic effects, anti-cancer properties, boosting of the immune system, lowering of cholesterol levels and improvement of cardiovascular health.

  • One cup of white tea contains the same amount of antioxidants as 10 cups of apple juice.
  • Even the used tea leaves can be beneficial as fertilizer for the garden or to absorb odors in the refrigerator.

I’m glad I searched the facts on tea, because I had no idea!

Chamomile tea has been consumed for hundreds of years. It is made by infusing

German chamomile (Matricaria recutita), a member of the sunflower family, in hot water. But Chamomile is actually a flower , not an herb .

Here are 3 health benefits of chamomile tea:

Better Sleep
Chamomile tea’s most well-known benefit is as a sleep aid. It is known for its relaxing and soothing properties and is often taken before bed to promote restful sleep.

Stomach Soother

Peter Rabbit’s mother was right to give him chamomile after he ate too much in Mr. McGregor’s vegetable garden.! Chamomile is helpful for a variety of stomach

problems. It soothes stomach aches, eases the symptoms of irritable bowel syndrome, promotes elimination, and assists in overall digestion. It is often found in teas for digestion in combination with peppermint.

Menstrual Cramps The ancient Egyptians used it to soothe menstrual cramps and now science is catching up. One study found that drinking chamomile tea raised urine levels of glycine, a compound that calms muscle spasms. Researchers believe this is why chamomile tea helps menstrual cramps. so it comes in handy for us females 😉 .

Green Tea.

It’s difficult NOT to brag about green tea.

More than a decade’s worth of research about green tea’s health benefits — particularly its potential to fight cancer and heart disease — has been more than intriguing, as have limited studies about green tea’s role in lowering cholesterol, burning fat, preventing diabetes and stroke, and staving off dementia.

Here’s a list of some of its amazing benefits — benefits that you may not have been

aware of. Some of these benefits are still being debated, so please do your own research if you want to use green tea for medicinal purposes.

  1. Weight Loss. Green tea increases the metabolism.
  2. The polyphenol found in green tea works to intensify levels of fat oxidation and the rate at which your body turns food into calories.
  3. Diabetes. Green tea apparently helps regulate glucose levels slowing the rise of blood sugar after eating. This can prevent high insulin spikes and resulting fat storage.
  4. Heart Disease. Scientists think, green tea works on the lining of blood vessels, helping keep them stay relaxed and better able to withstand changes in blood pressure. It may also protect against the formation of clots, which are the primary cause of heart attacks.
  5. Esophageal Cancer. It can reduce the risk of esophageal cancer, but it is also widely thought to kill cancer cells in general without damaging the healthy tissue around them.
  6. Cholesterol. Green tea reduces bad cholesterol in the blood and improves the ratio of good cholesterol to bad cholesterol.
  7. Tooth Decay. Studies suggests that the chemical antioxidant “catechin” in tea can destroy bacteria and viruses that cause throat infections, dental caries and other dental conditions

These are some of the many benefits but the reality is one cup of tea a day

will not give you all the abundant gains. The jury is out on how many cups are necessary; some say as little as two cups a day while others five cups — and more still say you can drink up to ten cups a day. If you are thinking of going down this route, you may want to consider taking a green tea supplement instead (it would keep you out of the bathroom)!

White tea has arrived in North America. While Chinese tea drinkers have been hip to white tea’s benefits since the Ming Dynasty, until recently it was virtually unknown outside of Asia. Not anymore. Today, everyone from chefs to medical researchers is praising white tea’s delicate flavor and purported health benefits. Market researchers predict consumers will soon share their enthusiasm, turning white tea into one of the hottest new food trends.

But, what is white tea? Most tea aficionados know that all tea comes from the same source: the Camilla Sinensis tea bush. Whether a tea leaf winds up in a cup of green, black, or oolong tea depends entirely on what happens after it is plucked. Black tea derives its dark color and full flavor from a complex fermentation process

that includes exposing crushed tea leaves to the air for a strictly defined number of minutes. Tea leaves meant for more mellow tasting green tea are not fermented at all, but merely withered in hot air and quickly steamed or pan-fried. A gentle rolling and final heating stabilizes the tea’s natural flavors. Oolong teas fall somewhere in the middle: partial fermentation gives them a distinct reddish color and a “flowery” flavor

Of course, nothing in life is perfect. Expect to pay more for white tea than other tea types – up to $25 US for a 2-ounce tin (40 to 50 cups) of Silver Needles. And, while many tea shops are starting to carry white tea, shopping online is still your best bet for the more upscale varieties.

And last but not least …Rooibos ! It’s called Rooibos (roo-ee-bosh),

Imagewhich means red bush. It’s delicious, super high in antioxidants. And it’s totally caffeine-free. Oh, and my mom loves it .

The leaves of the Rooibos plant, grown in South Africa, are used to make green unfermented and red fermented herbal teas. Used for centuries in Africa for its health benefits, Rooibos is available worldwide.Light and crisp, Rooibos can be sweetened or un-sweetened, with or without other flavors. I sometimes make a cup of Rooibos tea for my mom and add 1 squeezed lemon, which complements the tea nicely.

It isn’t difficult to live the high antioxidant lifestyle, taking in foods, herbs and teas that will protect your body in many ways, reduce the risk of various chronic and degenerative diseases and make you feel good. :)Drink Rooibos for taste or drink it for health. In either case, you’ll derive innumerable benefits.

Benefits: Red Rooibos tea is one of the best health drink or beverage for all those who care for their health and fitness. Some of the beneficial factors related to red Rooibos tea are as follows:

No Caffeine: Rooibos tea is totally caffeine-free, therefore it is recommended by doctors for insomniacs. A cup of Rooibos beverage just before going to bed can help you sleep better.

Goodnight Folks !

“Thank God for tea! What would the world do without tea! How did it exist? I am glad I was not born before tea.”
