Disney On Ice,”Follow Your Heart” LIVE review (Zianna O., loved the show)

The last time 9 yr old Zianna was downtown, she was speaking to a room full of people.  She  didn’t intend to make them all cry, but sometimes the truth hurts, but must be spoken. So she did it. Her words transcended through their hearts . Her message was shared internationally. Yes, this little girl had adults checking themselves for racial injustice.

First thing came to my mind is, “Who are her parents? ” I wanted to hug them. (Really tight.)  Everyone doesn’t take parenting seriously. It was clear that her parents did. I knew that as a mom,  when your child hurts, you hurt. The last thing you want is to have an emotionally scarred child for life.  As adults, we know that every high and low molds us into who we are, for better or for worse. This is most true of when we are young and our brain is rapidly developing. The power of everything from an unheard cry to an unmarked facial expression can have a heavy impact on a child’s evolving psyche.

Charlotte has a long way to go, but Zianna’s childhood must be protected and thank goodness, over half of Charlotte agrees with that! Including the numerous news stations that have interviewed her and  especially the amazing staff of Time Warner Cable Arena.

So guess what, for 90 minutes, Zianna her brother, mom, and stepdad attended the Disney On Ice, “Follow Your Heart” Live show. Little Zianna was laughing, dancing, moderating the story lines and just being a child. It was indeed what she and her family needed.  Big thanks to Feld Entertainment, Time Warner Cable and her parents for making this happen.

 

To my girl,

I will let you be children. For as long as I can, I will let you be children. I will protect your childhood fiercely. I won’t pressure you to do things you are not ready for. I will let you play, for hours I will let you play. I will let you discover yourselves. I will let you really know yourselves before you are pushed out into the big wide world on your own. I will let you imagine, and dream, and laugh, whenever you want to. I won’t ever wish this magical time away. All too soon you will be all grown up. You will worry about grown up things. But not now. For now you are a child, your job is to play, and that is important to me.

I will protect your childhood.

Wednesday Wow: 10010 My home schooled young Boys Are Coding!

PROGRAM OR BE PROGRAMMED

Yesterday my younger sons attended their very first coding class! I didn’t know what to expect from these young guys, but they did great! The look on each of their faces was thanks enough.

I didn’t learn it until after college. Even thing, I past it over and ran to the cut and paste – ins website apps.

The reason I  introduced them to it is not just because a girlfriend invited us,to this FREE series of classes but because I wanted the middle aged boys to improve their problem solving skills. Having children that “THINK” is a BIG thing for me.  I think in life you are either a consumer- programmed or a producer……. the programmer.  And tell me, what’s wrong  with having a Bill Gates, Steve Wozniak,or a Steve Jobs in our large family?

I hear that some countries, including England, have begun to add coding to their national school curriculum, teaching children as young as 5 how to code. It’s urged to expose them to it as an additional language.

Coding is what makes it possible for us to create computer software, apps and websites. Your browser, your OS, the apps on your phone, Facebook, and this website – they’re all made with code. (CODING EXPLAINED For BEGINNERS)

What Charlotte elementary school teaches coding???  These are the days that I am so grateful to have the opportunity to teach outside of the box. They are learning real skills! These skills include hand-crafting their  own websites, becoming a career coder or even starting a technology business. Most importantly, they will be able to understand the technology shaping their world.

There is a new business in Charlotte for educating; and that organization wants to teach you to code. Tech Talent South is a business that is now providing web development coding classes to Charlotteans. In the classes, applicants will learn to code with Ruby on Rails, Javascript and HTML/CSS. The business was started in Atlanta last year by Betsy Hauser Idilbi and Richard Simms.

Tech Talent South  is all over the US. (and Africa). And it’s steady growing. We attended the 1st class in Charlotte, NC – Courses Offered:

Friday Four: Mom Politics

No it isn’t a oxymoron. As a mom, I’ve been voting for over 25 years now. I have been often asked how do I feel about one candidate over the other. With the exception to President Obama, my answer has always been the same.  I am ultimately responsible for the livelihood of my family. One person could never have that  much power over my family.”

When I say that, it usually takes people by surprise until they think about my words. Then it clicks! Because we teach our children about morals, total wellness, self sufficiency and tenacity there is less cause to worry. Sure we have issues, but we always pull it back together.  

Would you believe me if I told you that my husband doesn’t vote? He doesn’t think votes are honored and that candidates are selected – not elected. And that’s ok. We have enough children to equalize him. I see decisions, and action coming from the top. So why not focus on that level of politics. Here’s my 4 tips to avoid being crippled by the system:

1. Understand and learn the law. – You have a whisper when you vote*. Just imagine if you were in the role of the decision makers. Decision Makers/the upper echelons * have economic assets, alliances, and the state in their column. Others* have their numbers and their key locations in the economic-social process. let’s learn the game so we can play. Then Play the game to Change the game!
2. Learn how to make it work for you- Knowing that someone did you wrong and getting justice are two different things. There are so many clinics, books, law libraries available. Most of them are free. There is nothing more empowering them the feeling of voice!  Being able to act progressively on your on behalf requires work. Get the entire family involved and watch how confidence soars!
3.  Don’t just be a democrat or republican because your parents are. Earlier this year, I took my sons to a Student Mock General Assembly . It was organized by Americans For Prosperity and hosted by Republican William “Bill” Brawley.  The boys learned how a bill becomes a law! I have yet to hear about or attend one hosted by the democrat. For that reason I would never say which is better. You can  make the decision for yourself.
4. Empower others!- Create a culture of resistance — by making collective actions and solidarity more attainable. Today, I don’t know any other mom fueled organization that empower moms better than Momsrising. Power is unequally distributed in organisations. That may never change, but organizations like Momsrising implements a number of strategies that can reduce the power of the strong or at least curtail their ability to use such power.
   

In closing, On April 24, 2015, Rep. Bill told a room full of young kids that one day he wouldn’t be here and someone will have to fill his house seat for the 103rd District. He asked “Why not you?” I dream of one day asking a mom of a upper echelon when did they know they were raising a “Decision Maker / member of the upper echelon.

Moms we are indeed in politic. Everyday of our life is a direct reflection of our action/ inaction. We have to  prepare our children now for tomorrow. It will make the difference between our children watching things happen and wondering why and making things happen.

Depression: When the music changes, so does the dance

Mental illness is real and should not be taken lightly. This is the second beautiful soul to leave this Earth, that I know of this year. Monday was such a sad day. I felt a real lost! Everyone should feel like they have someone on their side with resources to talk to because they do. My hands are up in the air!!!!

Have I ever been depressed? YES. At least 4 times a year. For different reasons, at different times of the year. Many do not know, but I lost my 11yr old daughter in 2005. She was just 11 years old and yes, my world changed that cold dark morning in October- days before my 30th birthday. It was unexpected and heartbreaking. A year later, my mom, my best friend transitioned too. My husband is not the friendliest at all times, (poor thing, is a veteran and came home with PTSD), my money isn’t either. My amazing children do not always do what I expect from them all of the time. Even on a more personal level, I can’t loose and keep off the weight, no matter how well I eat and stay on the go. Live is full of challenges. I don’t know if I’m coming or going at times myself!

Why I never harmed myself: Good question, I still can’t figure it out. Grace and mercy I guess! Going from a well paying corporate career to a stay at home mom is a big adjustment. I have 8 living kids that truly need me, a bright future that I’ve worked so hard to grow, and most of all, I want to see my children become productive adults.

Depression is the most common form of mental illness, affecting more than a quarter of Americans at some point in their lives.

When I heard the news of Titi, I came across a post by my friend, LaQuita Bullock, a mental health activist. She shared:

Mental illness is REAL! So many of our people suffer in silence afraid of judgment and criticism. Its ok to get help! Its ok to not be ok! If you feel like you have no where to go or that you just don’t feel right, go get help. People with diabetes seek help, people with high blood pressure seek help! They take medicines and try to help themselves get better. Why can’t it be that way with a mental health issue?! I have spoken to psychiatrist, been diagnosed and I’m still living! Its not a shield of doom to have a mental illness. Anxiety attacks, uncontrollable mood swings,flash backs that scare you for days, depression so bad the only out you feel there is is death! But I sought help! I didn’t let mfs tell me what I needed. I just did what I needed to do for me and my family. Now I help others, and it feels good! Were going to break this stigma especially in minority communities. Its ridiculous to look down on someone for something they can’t help! It aint the devil, we aint crazy, you just STUPID! Step up your knowledge game.

Friday Four: Black Lives Matter!

The truth is Black Lives Do Matter. Have you ever been so disgusted and sad that you didn’t know what to say? As a mom and consultant to other mothers, that’s exactly how I have been feeling about these last few weeks of police murders. I do realize it’s both blacks and whites, because I am a African american mom of 5 sons, I’ll focus on that.

I believe that white skinned people were born from dark skinned people. I believe that NOT everyone from one race is perfect. I believe that the times we are living in are scary. I also believe that it’s the perfect time to make changes for the better IF we come together as ONE! -Kelle Pressley
