Wednesday Wow: Paying Your Doula

Would you love to hire a Doula but you honestly can’t afford one? Fear not! Your Health Insurance may cover it!

Whether your pregnancy was meticulously planned, medically coaxed, or happened by surprise, one thing is certain – your life will never be the same.
– Catherine Jones

So you’re having a baby huh? Congrats! Things are about to be change in a beautiful way!

Grab a bowl of oatmeal and relax. I did it 9 times, you’ll be okay.

I love being a Charlotte doula. I not only help couples before conception, but I also get to help them  during and after delivery. (Check out my Facebook page)

I love attending births.  I love how it makes me feel.  I love how it makes the mom feel.  I love making a difference in other peoples’ lives.

Charlotte has a great selection of professional doulas, and I am proud to be among some of the best in the business. IF I COULD DO IT FOR FREE I WOULD. But I can’t. Aside from the cost of education, books, workshops, continued education, and advertising (website, cards, brochures), we also take into consideration the time that it takes for all of these as well as out of pocket expenses.

In the grand scheme of things, you’re paying for an invaluable service during your pregnancy, labor, and birth. The difference a doula can make during this time is often priceless. The least that can be done is pay her asking fee.  If you need help with that, look no further than your maternity Insurance. (See My Webpage)

As a doula, one of the first questions I’m asked is, will my HMA pay for your services?  Here’s the short answer:

Expenses paid for a doula who’s primary purpose is for delivery of the infant are reimbursable. Charges where the primary purpose is child care after delivery are not covered. An explanation of the primary purpose should accompany the claim.

The following is a partial list of insurance companies have reimbursed in whole or in part for doula services:
Aetna Healthcare

Baylor Health Care System/WEB TPA
Blue Cross/Blue Shield
Blue Cross/ Blue Shield PPO
Degussa, a German Chemical Company
Elmcare, LLC, C/O North American Medical Management
Foundation for Medical Care
Fortis Insurance
Glencare Managed Health Inc.
Great-West Life & Annuity Ins. Co.
HNTB (Peoria, IL)
Houston New England Financial, Employee Benefits (Fort Scott, KS)
Humana Employers Health
Lutheran General Physician’s Organization
Maritime Life
Medical Mutual
Oschner HMO, Louisiana
Professional Benefits Administrators
Prudential Healthcare
Summit Management Services, Inc
United HealthCare of Georgia (San Antonio, TX)
United Health POS
Wausau Benefits, Inc

Note: I would ask the doula for her NPI (National Provider Number It may or may not be an issue. Find out before hiring her. or it may be coming completely out of your pockets.

~~~~ON NEXT Monday, I’ll tell you the procedure to filing your doula fees~~~~
HSA qualifications vary; including Medicad. For some insurance companies may want you to identify as an out of network licensed healthcare provider and may make it easier to get reimbursement to your clients.  Depends on the insurance company and the state insurance laws.
I tell my clients to get their OBGYN to write them a prescription for me (a doula) One day Blue Cross Blue Shield called me directly just to ask if I was a doula in their network  and I was so proud to say, “Not yet but I am a certified doula .”  (Via my  numerous clients birth records and doula registration receipts) But they didn’t ask for them . So far, getting paid has never been an issue for me. My clients are instructed to submit receipts through their health insurance coverage, not a flex spending.
Feel free to check out my Pintrest board on ‘Pregnancy’. It’s the rated board for doulas! I’m sure you’ll find great information there.
If this hasn’t helped, just go to your HSA . They should have a third party administrator who can answer this for you.
Wednesday Wow: Water birth
This past week has been amazing. I helped deliver a baby in water. My son came home from college and I got impregnated! Well, that last one is a stretch, as I am creating something greater inside of me. It’s not a human baby, but it’s almost as incredible. I’ll tell you more about that later. But, now, about that water birth……
What hospital did Adam take Eve to in order to deliver Cain and Able?
Just like it sounds, a water birth is giving birth in water. You may choose to deliver in a bathtub, hot tub (with the temperature turned down), or other pool of water. You can have a water delivery at home, in a birthing center, or in a hospital.
Water is believed to help the mother surrender to the birth process and create a feeling of tranquility
“Amy”, my assistant organizer went into labor. I waited for the call forever seems like, but when it came, the first thing came in my mind was, “pray!” She was more collected than I ever imagined her to be. But I knew the path we were taking was taboo in our current day, social group, and age demographic.  “Amy” had a water birth. No drugs or other excessive procedures were used.
This isn’t “Amy” I just wanted to add it to this post. But it does a great job showing the baby coming out of water.(owners link attached)
When she asked me to be her birthing partner, I jumped all over it. On the morning that she delivered, I pulled out all the tools I could think of, from the relaxing oils, gentle rubs, mind soothing affirmations, forehead compress, minerals infused water, and labor ball-everything!
As her contractions came, she continued to breathe and cruise right through them. Sure, she was in anguish but her when I see that petite thumb of hers pop up from under her, I knew she was doing great. Her loudest moan was at the ring of fire. (That’s right before the baby crowns)
When baby “BP” came out, it felt “right.” I had 9 births but none of them compared to what just happened. “Amy” allowed her body to follow baby BP’s lead. He flowed out when he was ready.  No one yelled “PUSH! “or “HOLD it till the team gets here.”  It was all about “Baby BP”, as nature intended.
Right then I knew without a doubt that we, moms were highly connected to GOD.
So happy to say that mom, baby and placenta are all doing well. I wish that more moms would open their minds to it.
I could get use to this. Hmmm “Kelle The Doula….what a nice ring to my ears!
Friday Four: It’s Doula Week!
doula1This week was World Doula Week! Did you celebrate by saying thank you?
I love doulas,midwives and other supportive birthing partners! I’ve used them for the last 4 births and it’s made a world of difference compared to the first 5 births. I’ve found them tobe able to minimize my stress and pain, level in oerder to enourage healthly- natural births
Have you met a doula? They are some of the most open minded people ever, and there are different types of birthing partners. Midwifes are one step above doulas and one step under OBGYN’s. and your husband are right there beside the doula. As she works as your assistant, voice, and planner. A post-partum doula is just as awesome, the will go from the pre labor, Labor and delivery , to the post care.  Yes, someone can come by and nurture mom after the birth and refrain from nagging about the state of the house.
I was talking with two of my mom friends and asked them to consider a doula. They both asked why and I responded by saying that a birth doula is knowledgeable about childbirth, understanding the physiology of birth and the emotional needs of a woman in labor. She provides continuous emotional support, physical comfort measures and an objective viewpoint while remaining with the woman throughout the entire labor and birth. The constant support is possible because birth doulas have no other “patients” to attend to, no shift change and no other responsibilities other than the overall well-being of the woman in labor.
chart doulaDoula’s  often use the power of touch and massage to reduce stress and anxiety during labor. Massage helps stimulate the production of natural oxytocin. The pituitary gland  secretes natural oxytocin to the bloodstream which causes uterine  contractions and also secretes it to the brain, which results in a  feeling of well being, drowsiness  and a raised pain threshold. Synthetic IV oxytocin can not cross into  the blood stream and brain, so it increases contractions without the  positive psychological effects of natural oxytocin.
At least  thirteen scientific studies evaluating the effectiveness of doulas have  shown that having a doula present at your birth can have the following  results:
  * Shorter labor by 25% (average two hours less for first time mothers)
* Reduced need for pain medication
* Fewer episiotomies
* 40% reduction in the use of forceps
* 40% reduction in the use of Pitocin
* 50% reduction in cesarean rate
* 60% reduction in the request of epidurals
* Greater satisfaction with the birth
* Better mother infant interaction
* Improved neonatal outcomes
* Increased breastfeeding success
Here’s just 4 reasons doulas are awesome!
  1. They can help you write an intelligent birthing plan.
  2. They help untangle labor and delivery myths, stress, and unfortunates.
  3. They help moms & family mentally prepare for birth/ a new addition.
  4. They can connect you with a very well stock list of local resources, service providers, and new mom goodies.
I’d say they are worth their weight in gold! To all of my Birthing Support Partners, THANK YOU FOR BEING YOU!!!!
Boxer Joe F., singer Heavy D. and “The Fair“NOT!”
Last week was such a WEEK!  Anything that could happen just about did & you really just had to charge it to the game of  life!
One of the worlds greatest boxers, Joe Frasier died, then R & B singer, his Hotness ‘ Heavy D. followed. (My cousin dated him- when he was just Dwight) but that wasn’t how my week started.
Oh no. no. no‘!
Sunday evening , I got a call & I was told that I couldn‘t have the fair at my church because of structural and other liability issues. OKAY!!!! Now- Really? I‘m thinking- Sunday, Monday Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday – heck- 6 days BEFORE  the wellness fair & I‘m JUST now being notified??  What planet does that make sense on????    So Monday, I took that day to regroup. I battled with the idea of just canceling it or finding another spot quickly. To me securing another place would prove 2 things; where’s there a will there’s a way, & that I was totally committed to the kids, event partners, and event sponsors. So Tuesday I got to calling & typing. I had a new spot by Wednesday. Now, I had to do everything all over again. (Yes, I micro manage, & yes I‘m working on that) From the list of 17 partners we started with, it had dwindle down to just 8- oooooookkk!
Job Corps- ran out of supplies, Curvy All Over, was getting out of the hospital, Carlos. V., Smile Starters, caught – a brain draft……..I could go on & on with the list, but I’ll save that for another post. I could understand why they were no shows for the most part, but I wont take much from their professionalism.
But Earth fare South Park ( Children Chef competition), Jr..League WearHouse,(Re-Fashion show) Niki Barbar of Aquarian Hands, (a birthing consultant)“Jamel”(oooooooooo- that boy can sang- click the link!), Hope S. Piggie, a certified C.P.A. (She hosted a dynamic workshop called from Piggy bank to bank accunt) Photographer, Alvin was there to take “Shutterfly”sponsored photos,  (inbox me if you want a few free prints for the holidays) Oneaka Mack, the beautiful choreographer, shared a wonderful African dance demo- (video will be in next fb post.) and Wanda B, of Physical Perfected, (completely held it together ) – they came out and just ripped it for our crowd of less than forty chaps from the neighborhood.
We didn’t waste anytime. The workshops were hosted, {CHECK} the awesome door prizes were awarded, {CHECK} the youth gained great insight to wellness {CHECK}, our event partners felt that their time was well invested {CHECK} we listened to “Jamel” {Ooh-DOUBLE CHECK} and we left! {Yes, sounds like another successful Total Children‘s Wellness fair to me!} Folks that arrived after 1pm was shocked to see the parking lot of the Boys & Girls Club on Milton Rd. was cleaned out. To them I say, enjoy the soon coming photos and videos  and of course be on time next year.
God willing, the Total Children Wellness Fair will be hosted again on the 2nd Saturday of September, from 11-2pm. In closing, look what my horoscope said yesterday about me.
Sunday, Nov 13th, 2011 — Once you make up your mind, no one will be able to talk you out of your decision. You are ready to stand behind your commitment today, making you a formidable opponent if your judgment is questioned. Nevertheless, your stubbornness can be misleading because you’re interested in discovering what’s real, and are not as close-minded as you sound. Back up your penchant for the truth by showing your intellectual flexibility when it’s appropriate.
Yup- that’s KelleKeisha- QC Super mom!
