Happy Birthday Dr. King!

You’re Invited To The Party!! Help us celebrate Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. on Wednesday, 16 2019 at the West Charlotte Library, located at 2157 West Blvd, Charlotte, NC 28208. Everyone is welcome to this free community event sponsored by Momsrising and friends and hosted by yours truly!

MLK Day is a day to honor the civil rights crusader and is also great time to teach kids about his life and what the Nobel Peace Prize winner stood for. Local Charlotte families will be coming together once again on Wednesday, Jan. 16 to celebrate Dr. King’s legacy and to empower local children to be the change-makers of the future.

This year’s event theme is “His Dream: Fifty Years Later.”
Activities include storytelling for children, family-friendly live performance about Dr. King’s legacy, arts and crafts workshops, dance and more.
They will literally beat our anti civil rights pinata and through a roundtable, share how they would have reacted if they were in the shoes of Ruby Bridges and Dr. King. This highly engaging program is recommended for kids 3 and older.

Charlotte Mecklenburg Library – West Boulevard 2157 West Blvd Charlotte, NC 28208 1/16/18 5 :30-7:30 pm Light and yummy refreshments will be served.

Experts have said that helping young people become productive members of society involves more than sending them to school every day. As a community of parents, educators and caretakers, there are ways to look beyond the classroom to find community members who can help cultivate the next generation of innovators, leaders, entrepreneurs and change makers. If you are one of them contact me Kelle to find out how we can work together for our children’s future. Or say hello at this event. We hope to see you there.

Urban Horticulture in The QC.

Give a Man a Fish, and You Feed Him for a Day. Teach a Man To Fish, and You Feed Him for a Lifetime

It’s been a minute huh? Ok, here’s a very fast  update. I’m on the Bulb’s advisory board! (Yaaaay Me!) And I’m also now a certified in CPR for youth and adults.

For the last 6 weeks, home-schooled students across Charlotte from 3 years old to 16 have been learning how to grow food in small spaces. These kids were from very diverse walks of life.  I taught Urban Horticulture and the focus of the class was self sufficiency.

Each class was taught in a age appropriate group using engaging strategies to encourage creativity and exploration.  The students face literally lit up with our weekly gardening adventures.

So far we have successfully learned how to make:

  • Seed Bombs
  • Hydroponic Plants
  • Mini Greenhouse
  • Raised Bed Gardening

The biggest take home for these students were

For me, it was verification that parenting greatly reflects a garden.

We all begin as seeds. The better you tend to it the seeds, the better it grows, and the more fruitful it will be. To do the opposite is perilous. Too many weeds and wild animals will destroy it.

Disclosure—> I am not a master gardener or carry any degree in the science of horticulture. I am just a mom that believes in self sufficiency and have learned so much from local master gardeners and lots of trial and error with my little guys in tow.

Homeschooling with Hurricane Florence

First off, let me just say, “I survived Hugo”!Hurricane Hugo damage totals.

Hugo was scary. It was loud. It was confusing. And it was destructive.

I remember following it’s path. Noting what it was doing in each town it touched. My parents did everything they could, from boarding up the windows, getting tons of supplies, and even waiting in a gas line for 3 hours only to get 5 gallons. As it was the limit per car.  Then Hugo hit. We all slept together in our parent’s bed and oddly enough, we siblings fell asleep till the next day. That morning we woke up to many disasters. Starting with a big hole in the roof of our back porch and a fallen tree in the front yard. My dad wanted to go out to see what damages occurred in town.  And boy it was a mess!! Our little town of Hemingway is still recovering. From that experience, I’ve learned to be mindful but not fearful.

So when I heard about hurricane Florence, I knew what we needed to do, and what nonessentials to remiss

My husband purchased a generator months ago. That was the best investment yet. We purchased 2 cases of water, fruit, rice, beans and ordered pizza. We knew we wouldn’t get over a category 1 effects of Florence and that wasn’t enough for us to leave our home.    https://www.facebook.com/clt.stories/videos/729447094062156/

So it’s Sunday and Florence has done her damage, as she approaches Charlotte!!!!! Screenshot_20180916-102307.png

Florence weakens to a tropical depression but flash flooding is far from over

Although flooding is still possible, I can take the rain. Heck, I LOVE the rain and wind flow. No problem there. But the kids are a whole different story. Sure we could have just cuddled up and watch movie galore and played a few cards games but we’re extra. lol

  1. We did container gardens with our worn out Nike sneakers.
  2. Played card games.
  3. We cleaned up our closets
  4. Researched hurricanes. We learned what causes them, what it is, and how they end.

My message is this, you control their world. Make it scary or make it empowered.  The difference is information and creativity. Neither of them are expensive. Okay, gotta go hide and take a nap. (((Hopefully)))

Florence Notes:

After an emergency, you may need to survive on your own for several days. Being prepared means having your own food, water and other supplies to last for at least 72 hours. A disaster supplies kit is a collection of basic items your household may need in the event of an emergency.

And we have a little stupidity (opportunist) Just read it.

National HomeSchool Spirit Week

We have been homeschooling for 13 years now! It works for us! Right now we have four boys homeschooling and I recently (get this) started teaching again out side of the home. For  three years I taught SES in the Charlotte Mecklenburg School system with MasterMind and Centipede Math tutoring companies. And even now, I tutor privately (moonlight) with Wyzant.  (I know- what don’t I do- right?) But get this, it’s at the local YMCA and it their African american homeschool  group. And it’s something we do here for our class study, Urban Horticulture. { Growing produce, flowers, and other plants in small spaces scientifically and aesthetically}  I make a little change AND my boys get to attend other classes at a big discount! It’s a when win as I see it!

Now, my question to you is – have you heard about National Homeschool Week? Neither did I, but that’s okay. Here’s what it looks like:  National HomeSchool Week is a nonpartisan, nonpolitical public awareness effort to support homeschooling families, share homeschool resources, and to amplify homeschooling parents voices. Granted, homeschooling is legal in all 50 states now. Yet, the battle for public opinion is where we have more work to do.

It is celebrated September 17th – 21st each year.

I love this daily missions.

They all reflect the quality, and progressive education we parents provide in a fun way. As you see homeschooling is slowly buy surely gaining credibility, traditional traditions and performance standards. Our goal is to create options that make it easier for all parents. Friday Four: Seaside Memories

Easter weekend 2018

My aunt summoned us early the previous week. She requested all the small kids to be at her house in Conway for dinner and a egg hunt. We accepted and started looking for our fancy church- like clothes.IMG_20180401_165150452.jpg

Our trip home began at  8am. It us three hours to get there. It sun was kissing our face in the sun roof of the Buick Encore. The closer we got the more I thought about the beach. Growing up, it was our family refugee from the busy work and school week.  It was almost like it was calling me, calling us all. Because the boys, one by one, began asking to go the Pawley’s Island before returning back to Charlotte. We made it through a plate or two of my cousins and eldest aunt dinner plates, catch up conversations with the aunts, impromptu haircuts from cousin Lamont and even the trash talking in the background from the men folks playing cards for quarters in the driveway. As we got ready to issue our so-longs, the requests began once again.

Awe shucks………. I knew there was no way I could be that close to the beach and not go. Sure the water wouldn’t be warm enough to go surfing but it was perfect to watch the boys play on the beautiful sand, sit and watch the ocean waves dance and even build sand castles.

And it’s just what we did. Of course we took pictures and chatted with the locals after our quick stop at the beach store for floats, sand pails, and salt water taffy.

We had a wonderful time and hope to return soon for more vitamin Sea.

I’m sharing all of this because in the next coming years, I do not know if we will have moments like this again. Under President Trump, the plan Aims to Open Up Almost All of America’s Coastline to Risky Offshore Drilling.

Image result for offshore drilling and family

Drilling for oil on our coast is risky. A spill/leak will happen as it has in every other occurrence. Here’s four reasons from a mom, homeschooling, business owners and beach lover’s point of view why you should say no to the Trump administration and pro-drilling members of Congress:

  1. There are other sources of energy available that would be less abrasive to retrieve and cheaper to use. I found 8 right here online.  Click HERE to see them.
  2. If we can’t go to the beach, why would we shop the local stores? Business would suffer.
  3. There’s something special about the ocean. You can’t get the peace of mind, wind, and freeness anywhere else.
  4. The beach is a huge classroom. There you can learn about the history and exploration of the ocean, geography, science, math and marine biology. Your children can learn to name the oceans and continents, learn bodies of water, know aquatic terms such as bay, peninsula, sea, marsh, pond, river. Study all living sea creatures and learn about ocean exploration.

bbbbbbbeachAt this point, the plan is still preliminary; it won’t be finalized for a year or more. This offshore drilling proposal will be very real for many people who might not have been involved in politics before. They are getting involved now. The Trump administration may not have listened to state and local stakeholders yet, but soon the president won’t be able to ignore the chorus of voices demanding that he keep offshore drilling out of the Atlantic, Pacific and Arctic Oceans, and the eastern Gulf of Mexico.

Now is the time to take a stand and demand change. Add Your Voice, Click here to say NO Drill NC!

And it is an interesting biological fact that all of us have, in our veins the exact same percentage of salt in our blood that exists in the ocean, and, therefore, we have salt in our blood, in our sweat, in our tears. We are tied to the ocean. And when we go back to the sea, whether it is to sail or to watch it, we are going back from whence we came.  –John F. Kennedy

In 2014 it was Disney, in 2015- Doc McStuffins,  The Minions in 2016, and now it’s the Flinstones! Each year, we get better and attract better sponsors. The only thing that never changes is the format. We select a fun theme. One that will take the parents on a mental vacation. We then combine a vegan dessert bar, live entertainment, a DJ, a $20 shopping lane (consisting of mom & pops small business owners), and really fun games and decor! It works like magic! This year is no different! You just gotta come out and join us this year!

Disney On Ice,”Follow Your Heart” LIVE review (Zianna O., loved the show)

The last time 9 yr old Zianna was downtown, she was speaking to a room full of people.  She  didn’t intend to make them all cry, but sometimes the truth hurts, but must be spoken. So she did it. Her words transcended through their hearts . Her message was shared internationally. Yes, this little girl had adults checking themselves for racial injustice.

zo

First thing came to my mind is, “Who are her parents? ” I wanted to hug them. (Really tight.)  Everyone doesn’t take parenting seriously. It was clear that her parents did. I knew that as a mom,  when your child hurts, you hurt. The last thing you want is to have an emotionally scarred child for life.  As adults, we know that every high and low molds us into who we are, for better or for worse. This is most true of when we are young and our brain is rapidly developing. The power of everything from an unheard cry to an unmarked facial expression can have a heavy impact on a child’s evolving psyche.zoz-bmp

Charlotte has a long way to go, but Zianna’s childhood must be protected and thank goodness, over half of Charlotte agrees with that! Including the numerous news stations that have interviewed her and  especially the amazing staff of Time Warner Cable Arena.

So guess what, for 90 minutes, Zianna her brother, mom, and stepdad attended the Disney On Ice, “Follow Your Heart” Live show. Little Zianna was laughing, dancing, moderating the story lines and just being a child. It was indeed what she and her family needed.  Big thanks to Feld Entertainment, Time Warner Cable and her parents for making this happen.

To my girl,

I will let you be children. For as long as I can, I will let you be children. I will protect your childhood fiercely. I won’t pressure you to do things you are not ready for. I will let you play, for hours I will let you play. I will let you discover yourselves. I will let you really know yourselves before you are pushed out into the big wide world on your own. I will let you imagine, and dream, and laugh, whenever you want to. I won’t ever wish this magical time away. All too soon you will be all grown up. You will worry about grown up things. But not now. For now you are a child, your job is to play, and that is important to me.

I will protect your childhood.

disnet

The show will be here until the 2nd of October. Regardless of what you feel about the police and Black Lives Movement, remember to protect your child.  Go see Disney On Ice Live “Follow Your Heart” before they leave town. It is absolutely the best thing you can do for your child (ren)
