Friday Four: Parenting Kids As The Police Kills Blacks

Do you feel like you are in the Twilight Zone? Are you angry, confused, fearful, hopeless, ready to leave the United States of America? I am.Just yesterday, we celebrated The Fourth Of July; The Declaration Of Independence,  then BAM- today the police goes on a Black Man Purge!

I’ve had to come off my “GOD Box” to put my Facebook Lurkers in check, because they got too bold behind the computer screen. But I knew they were just speaking their truth and  I should really understand the underlying information they were sharing.  I received that they wanted power over us, our children and our livelihood. That, I just can’t allow. And neither should you parents.

I will not live in fear. I will not allow my children to live in fear. I will not rely on anyone for my food (completely) And I will not allow my loved ones to perish either. It’s a great feeling to know it’s not all whites that feel this way. I must add.Because I want my children to continue  to grow their love, appreciation and knowledge of all races.

It is said, “A generation that ignores their history  has no future.” The time is now to wake up and  and be present with our children’s  psychological needs. New sneakers won’t do it. There are four things I need you to do this weekend:

  1. Go plant a garden. Yes, start feeding yourself. As they say, the hand that feeds you -control you. It could soon become a batering tool, and it’s a great way to get in shape and get your mind of all of the brothers and sisters being murdered by the police. Today, my husband took the kids to play tennis and I took them with me this morning to shop for school and college supplies.
  2. Learn 4 “Prepper Strategies”. It’s time to work together. Look out for your neighbor, and protect each other. Be prepared to make sacrifices to help take care of others by learning ways, to build together. As anger increases, so does crime rates. As a parent, your job is to protect your seeds.
  3. Be mindful of what and how you communicate information about police, and other people of authority with your minors. I hate the officers that kill for no reason. I also know helpful officers that strive to keep peace in words and not violence.
  4. Back away from social media. It can be overwhelming and depressing. Moniter what your children are exsposed to also. Instead, celebrate, love, respect more!

Concrete Ways to Be an Actual Ally to Black People

you sffirm

IF WE ONLY HAD IT this GOOD WITH POLICE OFFICERS—–

One good thing about is that the WORLD is the getting true story of American blacks. So many countries have been on social media connecting with black Americans. They want facts they know they will not get on the news. Thanks to social media, it is out.

Wednesday Wow: I Do’ Too! Solemization

It’s Summer and officially wedding season! If you’re in North or South Carolina, I’m ya girl!

Okay, so what began as a way to bring more money into the home, has grown to something so much more. Yes, I’m creating marriages, but I’m also creating more  ways to be a part of my children life. That really excites me!

It cost me less than $200 and I can use this new asset in all 50 states for the rest of my life. To all my mama friends, readers- you gotta do it!

I’m still getting used to being called Minister Kelle, because I am a southerner, and grew up thinking of ministers sorta differently. But then I thought about it and said to myself, “Girl, you’re more real than a lot of them out there. -Girl You Good!”

So with my ordination, I can do many things.besides solemnize a wedding  I could also:

  1. Perform A Baptism/ Welcome To The World Ceremony

  2.  Preside Over A Funeral

  3. Be A Chaplain

We can touch the lives of others in a prison or hospital. Sick and dying patients in hospitals around the country have been comforted by our church’s members, and prison officials actively encourage those who are eager to bring religion to others to come to their institutions and rehabilitate their inmates.

  4. Start A Church ( I know right? Wow!)

  5.  Ordain others

The perfect couple for me would be laid back, spiritual but not too religious, fun loving , don’t have a church home and most times open minded.

For me, it’s important to know the couple and meet them way before they get to the altar.I want to know if couple has any religious or cultural rituals that they want to include. Do they want to break a glass? Jump a broom? Do they want to include any Buddhist poetry? Will there be any readings or songs in the ceremony? Of course I offer counseling, but it’s not required. But I will pray with the couple before the wedding and commit to pray for them all the way to the wedding day.

And I was thinking, for now, I’ll offer my services to the moms of Queen City Stay At Home Moms at a discount as a member perk. Everyone else $220 for a basic service and rehearsal rate. I really don’t think   I would marry anyone out of the Carolina’s.
Which works out fine based on the research I’ve done already. It is said, that in

North Carolina:   Marriage Officiants:/ordained minister of any faith who is authorized to perform marriages by his church may do so.

In North Carolina, I must return the license in SC….. the couple can once completed, return the license to its office of issuance (usually by mail) within 30 days of the wedding. The license is then recorded by the state and the marriage becomes a legal binding contract.

Marriage in South Carolina is governed by Chapter 1 of Title 20 of South Carolina’s Code of Laws.

SECTION 20-1-20. Persons who may perform marriage ceremony.

Only ministers of the Gospel, Jewish rabbis, officers authorized to administer oaths in this State, and the chief or spiritual leader of a Native American Indian entity recognized by the South Carolina Commission for Minority Affairs pursuant to Section 1-31-40 are authorized to administer a marriage ceremony in this State

2016-17 Graduation- Family Milestone

I am floating on cloud nine right about now!  By many accounts, I should not be where I am. I should not be married. I shouldn’t have smart children, nor should they be graduating, especially from college! BUT GOD!

This year, I have been honored to have not one, but 4 graduates to celebrate. My husband, my oldest son, and two of my daughters. It was not planned or budgeted. But think goodness for the life style we have. Because of that reason alone we are gonna celebrate in the most grand way possible. After all, how often do you get 4 graduates in one year?

My graduates- Raj- Husband- Army Veteran, Central Piedmont Community College/CPCC –  Elementary Education majorIMG_5125-001

My oldest son- Jervon jervon                 Basketball MVP, Hampton University, Hampton VA.  B.S. Liberal Arts

Below is a clip from one of his recent games at Hampton University. Watch here!

My 2nd oldest daughter- JC        Working Teen, Hemingway High, College bound- She hasn’t decided what she wants to do as of yet. jcp

My 3rd oldest daughter- DeeDua , teenpernuer,  Providence High School Trade School Paralegal Studies dee

I’m so proud of each of them. Each of them were born with obstacles to overcome. From being the child of a single mom to starting life on this side some 4 months early. As they say the tassel was worth the hassle. They made it! Who else is celebrating a graduate? The video below is of a Momsrising friend of mine. She was sharing some motivational tips for my daughter DeeDua. Listen in!

I am so proud of each of my scholars. I know they are prepared for whatever life throws at them. My hope is that the younger one will follow their path and not mine as it relates to student loans. Going to college for free is a blessing. My husband education was sponsored by the Veteran administration. My son attended all four years under a athletic scholarship. My daughters had to search and apply for hundreds of grants and scholarships. The money is out there. You can get some too!

Friday Four: Lessons From a Student Athlete’s Mom

hamp me

I think everyone has a story, but If I may, let me tell you why I am sitting here smiling from ear to ear.  It’s a classic story. Teen girl from a small town get pregnant and quits school to raise her child and never leaves the small town.BUT this isn’t my story!

I had a son at 16 years old. I finished college. Got married. Now I work from home . Today, that child graduates from college  with a college degree in May!

Be Happy For Where You Are.

Be the Best At What You Are.

But Never Stay Where You Are- KLP

I will never claim to know everything. But these are four tips I want to share with you to help get through those college years with your student athlete!

  1. Provide Birth Control– Since my son was not a virgin upon entering college, stopping at the big box store to purchase supplies including a large box of condoms was on list of “Must Do!” I didn’t want to play stupid. My son is a 6’8  basketball player. Grown women ,non African american women, and everything in between was hitting on him before he left for school and I knew that attending college and left to his own desires……. it would not end. So as always, it’s better safe than sorry parents.
  2. Stay Connected like AT&T– Now there’s FaceTime, Texting, Instagram, SnapChat,  and even cheap gas (yes, I said it) While there is nothing like a care package or phone call, don’t limit yourself to those two things. Be your child’s biggest fan! You should always be his/her biggest support system. College is stressful and can be over whelming.Continue to guide your child.                           Those pressley Boys 7-6-2015 12-21-33 PM
  3. Be supportive like banker– Give them money but be very discriminate. If you were giving them allowance when they were home, continue sending them money. Unless they are at a D1 school*, where money is slipped to them (athletes) here and there, your child is gonna need money for his/ her basic needs. Yet, be smart about it. There’s nothing more regretful than paying for your child to party their way out of school. Now some kids will get little jobs while taking classes. That’s a great thing. You may still have to help with upkeep of the car and other misc things.
  4. Accept help with a crystal ball.- giWhen my son first started playing basketball, everyone wanted to “help.” Then when he felt like being a goof ball and messing up, they fled. Nothing hurts more than that, for him or myself. From that experience, I’ve learned to evaluate everyone on a individual basis. I know that everyone that smiles in our face isn’t always the best one to trust with your child. It’s true,Not everyone wants something. Finding sincerely good people can be hard at times. But when you do find someone to look out for your son – you keep them. And you make sure they know that they are appreciated. I sleep so good at night knowing that almost every game my son has ever went to, there were warm hugs and familiar smiles waiting for him in that city. Even on campus, he has a circle of people that love him for who he his. That’s a blessing!                                                             https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KiGoh1BUJk4

Wednesday Wow: Sister SoulJah in the QC

Happy Black History Month people! My month of reflection began last week when Sister SoulJah visited the Beatties Ford Rd. library in Charlotte NC. It was like a dream come true. I now have one less thing to accomplish on my Bucket List!

I believe in divine interventions. I believe that you are where you are, sent elsewhere, drawn toward something or some one beyond your conscious efforts. It’s like the minute you intentional strive to be a certain way, your path opens up! The I decided that I would be the best mom I could be. So I sought support. I know I wanted  to connect with people who have taken various paths in life to become the incredible leaders they are today.  (In this video, it’s another great woman, Cheryl LittleJohn of Gastonnia)

During a recent visit to my local library, I seen a flyer saying Sister Souljah was coming to Charlotte for a book signing of her book The Coldest Winter Ever  (you can buy it on Amazon via the high light link)

This was perfect because I had just received her first book from my daughters. They found it in a bin at a local book store for free!

It’s called, No DISRESPECT.  It took me 3 weeks to read it. Not that it’s a hard read or anything, it’s just that I wanted to break it up in sections to use as a conversation piece while taking my girls to school across town in the mornings. It proved to be an asset. Our conversations were deeper. They opened up about the peers and day environment more easily. It’s because she is so relative, approachable, and in sync, I know her books will always  have a place within my family’s book shelf.

ss1

It was a honor to be in her presence with my teen daughters.  Sometimes when we tell our children things, they don’t always “get it!” Even if you experience it and crying your eyes out to warn them. But when it comes from another person. that speaks to them on their level. Spitting out a”  MF*”  here and there….. they tend to get it!

Here’s my short handed-cliff notes. I wrote them on the back of the paper I had signed for two mama friends. I wrote what she said. Do not let your child read it before you.

Sister SoulJahsister Soulajah.jpg

It’s been a long time. I haven’t wasted even a second. Been writing, editing, learning, teaching, and traveling the globe. This year, from 11/11 onward, is for the readers and book buyers. We will meet face to face. Share thoughts and converse meaningfully, and become better than we were before, each and all of us, InshaAllah.

If you want to sing your book and listen to her in person, meet her at her next book signing: click below!

Friday Four: Plan B- Alternatives To College

This year, like many other parents, I wonder what college my child will end up at. In my cases, I have three graduating within the next two years. Then a six year gap before the next graduation rush. With such a large number of blessings, it comes a bunch of questions. I know accept that everyone of them will not go to college. That’s okay, but what I won’t accept is not having a plan after graduation.

college

In many other countries, college is free. Not here in the U. S. (Yet)  Beside that  a traditional four-year degree isn’t your only ticket to a good job with a solid salary. Some kids may get lucky an pass the bar without going to college and go on to becoming on successful lawyer, baby sit enough of siblings of cousins to become a certified nanny like my friend, Dominique Rice of Perfect Placement . I even know of a man that makes good money helping other people make money. his business is called Charlotte’s Open Air Market. So it can be done! Here’s a couple of ideas to ease your mind about  ‘College or Bust’ theories:

  1. Start A Business At the end of it all, you’re gonna work hard. why not work for yourself?  With drive, initiative, and a quality product, it may be more attainable than you think to make it on your own. In fact, some of the most successful people of the 20th and 21st centuries were entrepreneurs without a college degree.
  2. Pick Up a Certificate Almost 30 million jobs in the U.S. pay $35,000 or more and don’t require a bachelor’s degree, according to the Georgetown center. But that doesn’t mean your education can stop after high school. Most middle-wage jobs — $35,000 to $75,000 a year — in fields with increasing demand, such as health care, information technology and public services, require some form of post–high school certification.   Mom Coach: Noun/ See QC Supermom. A mature woman that supports other mothers in child related issues. She uses her wit, education, personal experiences, influence and resources to help reach desired goals.

    3. Travel the world. Get a job and save up money to leave the country. Check out a world completely different from our own. Do it for a year. You will meet other foreigners traveling. You will learn what poverty is. You will learn the value of how to stretch a dollar. You will often be in situations where you need to learn how to survive despite the odds being against you. If you’re going to throw up you might as well do it from dysentery than from drinking too much at a frat party.1 You will learn a little bit more about eastern religions compared with the western religions you grew up with.

  3. typ (1)
  4. SELL YOURSELF Expose yourself to anything and everything positive that you possibly can. When he/she has found passion in that field, encourage her/her to sell his/ her skills. Then SCALE it into sellable items to save wear and tear on yourself.  I.e. dvd, keychains, trainings, etc. Mastering a unique skill builds discipline, lets you socialize with other people of all ages and backgrounds but who have similar passions, and gets you paid! COOLBEANS.COM

Education doesn’t have to be tedious, boring, and repetitive, but it should be a self-discovery process that encompasses not only your intellectual growth, but also your professional and personal development. Your child is NOT worthless. That’s what they want you to think. If you don’t go to college you will NOT “ruin your life”.

I was excited to learn about Berea College: . It’s green, smart and progressive. ….. and FREE! There are others doing it creatively too!
